The BMW Z8 moved the speedometer, tachometer and other gauges to the center of the dash. The retro-styled steering wheel also evoked classic sports cars with its three metal-rodded spokes and fat, leather-wrapped rim. What wasn't brushed aluminium was covered in supple leather, including parts of the dash, center console, door skins and even the rollover bars. The final touch was a viscerally black push-button starter located next to the steering wheel. Turn the ignition key to on.
The BMW Z8 has 400-horsepower 4.9-liter V-8 engine. The factory-estimated acceleration time of the BMW Z8 from 0 to 62 miles per hour was 4.7 seconds. The top speed of the BMW Z8 was electronically limited to 155 miles per hour. The rear turn signals and brake lights used neon tubes claiming to react up to ten times faster than conventional vehicle lighting. The steering wheel of the BMW Z8 also incorporated an electronic theft-deterrent system making the car difficult to steal. While the base vehicle was exclusively fitted with a six-speed manual transmission, the Alpina V8 Roadster featured a five-speed automatic gearbox.
