FORD CAPRI,

Overview

The Ford Capri was initially offered in L (1.3 and 1.6), GL (1.6 and 2.0), S (1.6, 2.0 and 3.0) or Ghia (2.0 and 3.0). The Capri L was something of a duffer being powered either by a 57bhp 1.2-litre overhead valve engine or a wheezy 72bhp single choke 1.6-litre mill. The rest of the range were far more fun, the 1.6-litre engine being an uprated 91bhp twin choke version whilst the 2.0-litre was good for 101bhp and the torque 3.0-litre generated an unstressed 138bhp.

Inside

The Seat bolsters are commonly threadbare, especially on Recaros and trim may be extremely hard to find. The Capri will feature a sportier interior. Leather, sports seats and a sports steering wheel, and different aluminum inserts will most likely make their appearance. The grey ‘Raven’ full leather Recaro seats, contrasted by red piping, are both comfortable and supportive.

Driving

The Capri rocks from side to side as when blip the throttle, bringing to mind the feeling of being at the wheel of a muscle car, primed and ready to tame a drag strip. The Capri’s performance is timid, verging on lethargic. But it delivers its power with proper grunt and an appropriate soundtrack. This proper front-engine, rear-wheel drive hero, meaning it’s not hard to get the tail wagging. Naturally, you have to wind down the window (no electric gubbins here) in order to adopt the authentic ‘Capri elbow’ driving position.
