FORD ESCORT,

Overview

The Escort Sedan has a 2.0-liter, SOHC four-cylinder engine as standard equipment. It generates 114 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. The ZX2's engine makes 130 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque. Either of these engines can be equipped with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Overall, it's a fine combination of performance, practicality, comfort, and economy.

Inside

Inside, the Excort has a swoopy instrument panel that blends into the door panels. Both front and rear interior room is good for this class, though the Focus has even more. The same goes for trunk space. The ZX2 will hold 11.8 cubic feet of cargo, while the Focus can manage 18.5 cubic feet. As with most small cars, the ZX2's split rear seatbacks can be flipped forward to make extra space for longer items.

Driving

The Ford's Escort offers sporty styling, responsive handling, brisk acceleration and everyday comfort and practicality for one or two people. The ZX2 is easy on fuel. Escort still offers a fairly nondescript driving experience - it's easy to drive and the road holding is safe enough but it's not a car that delivers much in terms of driver enjoyment.
