PEUGEOT 106,

Overview

The Peugeot 106 is a front-wheel drive front-engine mini hatchback with a choice of 3-5 doors & 5 seats. With 59 hp, the naturally aspirated 1.1 Litre 8v Inline 4 petrol engine accelerates this 106 XN 1.1 to 62 mph in 15.4 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 103 mph. Having a kerb weight of 890 kg, it achieves 44.8 mpg on average and can travel 443 miles before requiring a refill of its 45 litre capacity fuel tank. It comes with a 5 speed manual gearbox. Luggage space is 215 litres, but can be expanded to 528 litres for larger loads.

Inside

The cabin looks tired and finding a comfortable driving position is difficult. The pedals are a little too close together and slightly offset, which is distracting. The dashboard is simply laid out. Not bad in the front, but there is no enough rear legroom. Often found carrying three (or more) teenage boys in the back who emerge looking even grumpier than usual. There is difficult to get in and out of the three doors.

Driving

The 102mph petrol base version manages nearly 60mpg at an unrealistic constant 56mph and around 40mpg around town. The 1.4-litre diesel version is more frugal still, managing 76.3mpg at a steady 56mph and 50mpg around town. That works out to over 750 miles between fuelling stops. Very quick in the first three gears, after which the engine labours to 60 which is expected. The ride is very good around corners especially in twisty side roads and has recently performed brilliantly in the ice and snow despite its thin tyres.
